Paul manages the market-leading costs team in our Liverpool office and has over 25 years’ experience in the field of costs management.

Paul specialises in complex and high-value costs disputes and is regarded as a leading expert in the costs arising out of abuse claims. He has acted in many of the most high-profile and sensitive claims arising out of football, and the education and religious sectors. He has been involved in co-ordinating cross-sector strategies with multiple insurers and has secured useful guidance on the recoverability of costs in inquests and the appropriate grade and hourly rates in abuse claims.

His expertise has been recognised in the Legal 500: “Paul is highly knowledgeable and experienced in the area of costs. He commands his own against senior counsel on a regular basis and is highly regarded by all including opponents” and with his team singled out by clients as “the premier team for historic abuse claims in England and Wales”.

In addition, Paul has particular expertise in group litigation, multi-party claims and cost sharing agreements, having been involved in some of the largest and most high-profile sets of claims. He acts for insurers, local authorities and other public organisations including the police, charities and non-profit organisations, across a wide range of areas including clinical and professional negligence with experience of arbitrations and multi-jurisdictional matters.
